Can Lactulose syrup aggravate back pain and abdominal pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 26-year-old male. My height is 5 feet 6 inches. I have had severe back pain, abdominal pain, and constipation for a long time. However, recently, they have been aggravated and are causing a lot of discomfort. I have also been diagnosed with IBS. I was given Magnesium Citrate, Lactulose syrup, and tablet Zantac; however, nothing has helped.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Constipation can cause back pain as well as abdominal pain. Syrup Lactulose causes abdominal cramps to help in bowel movements and pass the stool. However, since it is bad, as you say, it is probably an impacted stool causing a subacute obstruction. I suggest you go to the ER for an abdominal X-ray. They will give you an enema wash if there is an impacted stool.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
