Do I have to take any emergency contraceptives after taking Femilon regularly?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been taking Femilon for the past six months as a regular contraception. I finished the 21 days of tablet and the last tablet was four days back and had unprotected intercourse two days back. Do I need to take any emergency contraceptives or Femilon will protect? Kindly guide me. Usually will get periods after five days on finishing the pack and I will start the new pack on the fourth day of my period.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

This combined birth control pills are a very effective form of contraception and if you take them regularly, you are almost 100 % protected. The point is, you are not only protected throughout the cycle but also even in those pill-free days. So, as you can see, there is no need to take any extra precaution if you have sex during those pill-free days. Do not take any I-pill. Now, there is a recommendation how to take these birth control pills like Femilon (Desogestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol). The guideline says to start a new pack from the first day of the cycle (new user) and continue the subsequent packs after a gap of five days irrespective of next cycle status. So, I recommend you to start the next pack of Femilon after a gap of five days irrespective of your cycle status. So, no fourth day or fifth day start for the next packs. Do not bother for the cycle date or flow amount. Just start the next pack after five days of finishing the previous one ignoring the cycle status.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks a ton for your reply. But before seeing your reply, I took one i-pill. So, when will I get my periods?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Thanks for interacting. As you have already taken the i-pill, your next cycle date is now unpredictable. I suggest you not to think about it. Start your next pack of regular contraception after a gap of 5 to 7 days irrespective of the cycle. Hopefully, you will get the next cycle after completion of that pack. But do not get upset if you face spotting or breakthrough bleeding meanwhile.
