Are masks still necessary to prevent COVID-19 infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

In my society, no one wears a mask. I do not know who is vaccinated and who is not. Though I used to wear a mask, I have refrained from it now. I tried wearing it, but it interferes with my breathing. Are masks still necessary? Will there be further COVID-19 waves? If it occurs, will it be slight or deadly?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

If one is vaccinated for two doses and possibly a booster dose, and if such a person is affected by COVID-19, it is more likely to be a milder infection. The occurrence of further COVID waves depends upon the presence of a mutated, transmissible, and pathogenic virus, which can spread rapidly. Therefore, I suggest you continue taking precautions of mask-wearing, hand sanitation (washing, sanitizers), and social distancing.

WHO (world health organization) has not declared the end of the pandemic. Hence, we all need to not abstain from the above measures.
