Why does a hairline crack hurt after my root canal crown?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I underwent root canal treatment a few years back. Now, I have a hairline crack in my front crown. I have severe pain while taking warm drinks and warm food. It started a week ago, and it is gradually becoming worse. An X-ray was taken, but it did not show any abnormalities.

How to cure this?

Kindly give your suggestions.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

Trauma (injury) may be the probable cause of the injury. The hairline crack can be due to a vertical fracture of the tooth. You are having pain because the fracture may involve the adjacent bone. Vertical fractures are difficult to rule out on an X-ray. Share the image of the intraoral periapical radiograph.

As for treatment, anti-inflammatory medicines have to be taken. Root canal treatment can be attempted if the fracture does not involve the root portion.

And for preventive measure do not bite with the front teeth till the treatment is complete.

Regarding follow-up, share the image of the front tooth and its X-ray. Mention whether color change and swelling are present. The further treatment plan can be discussed once the clinical picture is clear. Also, inform if any allergies are present to any medication.

I hope this helps you.

Revert in case you have any other doubts.

Thank you.
