How to manage Crohn's disease along with other illnesses?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 58 years old, and Crohn's disease has never existed alone for me. I have high blood pressure, joint pain, and now diabetes is developing as well. Steroids affect my blood sugar levels, biologic medications make me worried about infections, and pain medications affect my gut. It feels as though treating one condition always worsens another.

  • How does a 58-year-old person with Crohn's disease manage flares alongside other health conditions?

  • How do specialists coordinate care without overloading the body?

  • Is there a way to prioritize gut health without sacrificing heart health or metabolic health?

I am exhausted from juggling medications, appointments, and the fear of flares while already feeling physically and mentally stretched thin.

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and am sorry to hear about your discomfort.

Managing Crohn's disease at the age of 58 can be challenging when it is accompanied by diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, and joint pain.

Your treating doctor will usually evaluate your health as a whole rather than treating each condition separately. The main goals are to:

  • Keep Crohn's disease-related inflammation under control.

  • Avoid frequent use of corticosteroids because they can increase blood sugar levels and blood pressure.

  • Select medications that are safest for your overall health.

  • Monitor closely for infections and other potential side effects.

  • Coordinate care among your gastroenterologist, primary care physician, endocrinologist, and other specialists as needed.

In many cases, good control of Crohn's disease helps protect overall health by reducing flares, hospitalizations, and the need for corticosteroids.

Managing multiple chronic conditions can be physically and emotionally exhausting. Your healthcare team can often help simplify treatment plans, reduce unnecessary medications, and provide additional support. The goal is to keep you as healthy, active, and independent as possible while minimizing medication-related risks.

I hope this is clear, and if you have any questions at any time, please feel free to ask.

Thank you.
