Is root canal treatment necessary for a broken tooth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Before two weeks, a small piece of my tooth got broken. I have pain for a week. My pain is getting worse. I went to a dentist today and he took an X-ray. After taking the X-ray, he gave me two suggestions. The first option is root canal treatment and the other one is extraction. Is this really necessary? What is your opinion? I have attached the X-ray.

Kindly suggest.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. I have gone through the attachment (attachment removed to protect patient identity). When a part of a tooth broken, it is generally treated by these two options and so your dentist has given you the right option.

If a small portion of the tooth is broken without involving pulp, then it is possible to go for core build without doing root canal treatment but in your case, the damage has involved near your pulp. It causes increased risk. It can cause pain and complications in the future. I suggest you kindly save it and you can go for root canal treatment as it is one of your important teeth.

Hope I have clarified your query.

Thank you.
