Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am an 18-year-old boy. I am trying to grow my hair out, but I have been told that my scalp is not able to breathe normally, and I get more dandruff. Now, I think that the idea of the scalp not being able to properly breathe is a bit false, but it could be true. Please give your opinion.

Hi,

I am glad you chose icliniq for your medical-related queries.

I understand your concern.

It is not uncommon to experience dandruff, and while scalp breathing is not a scientifically recognized concept, several factors can contribute to scalp issues:

  1. Dryness: If your scalp is dry, it can lead to flakiness and itching. Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to keep your scalp hydrated.
  2. Over washing: Washing your hair too frequently can strip your scalp of its natural oils, leading to dryness and dandruff. Try washing your hair every other day or every 2 to 3 days.
  3. Fungal infections: Scalp conditions like dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis can be caused by fungal infections. Use an anti-dandruff shampoo containing ingredients like ketoconazole or selenium sulfide to help manage these conditions.
  4. Stress: High-stress levels can lead to increased oil production on the scalp, which can contribute to dandruff and other scalp issues. Practice stress-reducing techniques like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises to help manage stress levels.
  5. Diet: A diet lacking in essential nutrients like zinc, biotin, and vitamin B can contribute to hair loss and scalp issues. Incorporate foods rich in these nutrients into your diet, such as oysters, nuts, whole grains, and leafy greens.

Always consult a healthcare provider or a licensed dermatologist if you have persistent scalp issues or concerns about your hair growth. They can provide personalized advice based on your individual symptoms and medical history.

Hope I have clarified your query. I will be happy to help you further.

Thank you.
