Can I get pregnant with late ovulation and with no period?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My LMP was a few months back. I did not get periods after that. We thought I was further along when I found out I was pregnant a month later. I went for an ultrasound, and there was nothing on the screen. I went back three weeks later, and the baby was measuring six weeks old.

Is it possible to ovulate that late with no period?

Please assist.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

Yes, it is possible to ovulate later than usual. When ovulation happens late, the menstrual cycle may also shift, which can lead to a delayed period. This is a common reason why pregnancy dating may sometimes differ from expected cycle dates.

Now that your pregnancy is confirmed, it is important to begin routine prenatal care. Start taking folic acid supplements, as they help support the baby’s early development and reduce the risk of certain birth defects.

Your doctor will usually recommend some routine investigations during early pregnancy, such as:

  1. Blood group.
  2. Complete blood count.
  3. Urine routine examination.
  4. Fasting blood sugar.
  5. TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone).
  6. HbsAg (hepatitis B surface antigen).
  7. HIV (human immunodeficiency virus).

Also, try to avoid exposure to radiation and unnecessary medications, especially during the first trimester, unless they are prescribed by your doctor.

Regular prenatal checkups will help ensure both you and your baby remain healthy throughout the pregnancy.

I hope this answers your query.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
