Is my discharge after an emergency pill a sign of pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I want to ask. My last period was about a few weeks ago. At the beginning of the month, I had brownish mucus, which stopped, but since then, I have been getting watery or yellowish slimy mucus.

I had sex once around the middle of the month. The guy did not reach climax; only I did, and I took a morning-after pill the next morning.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

You are unlikely to be pregnant because you had intercourse during a less fertile period. In addition, you took an emergency contraceptive pill the next morning, and there was no ejaculation. However, for complete reassurance and peace of mind, I would still advise you to take a pregnancy test.

Coming to your delayed periods, instead of trying to directly induce regular cycles, it is more important to identify the underlying cause. Once the cause is identified and treated, the issue usually does not recur.

There can be multiple reasons for a missed or delayed period. The most common include stress, anxiety, and pregnancy. If these are ruled out, we then consider medical causes such as infections, thyroid disorders, prolactin imbalance, or ovarian conditions. You may require a few basic investigations, and once the exact cause is identified, it can be effectively treated.

In your case, since you mentioned brownish and slimy mucus, there is a possibility of a genital tract infection. If confirmed, you may need a course of antibiotics after proper evaluation.

The main point is that with the correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment, this condition is usually completely manageable, and you should be fine.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
