Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 23-year-old female. After engaging in unprotected sex, I took emergency contraceptive pills. Despite taking the pills, I continued to have sexual intercourse for the next consecutive days. Approximately seven days later, I started experiencing vaginal bleeding, although it stopped after a week. I was not sure about the cause of the bleeding, whether it was due to the emergency contraceptive pills or possibly related to pregnancy. Four weeks have passed, and I still have not had my period. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to Icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

In your case, menstrual irregularities could be attributed to a hormonal imbalance caused by the emergency contraceptive pill. Since you took the pill on time, the likelihood of pregnancy in your situation is extremely low. Abdominal pain accompanied by white discharge may result from the side effects of the emergency contraceptive pill; there is no need to be concerned. Some individuals also experience withdrawal bleeding due to the sudden hormonal shift in the body. Your next period might be unpredictable due to the hormonal imbalance induced by the pill. It could arrive earlier than expected or delayed by around one week. Hence, I suggest waiting and observing for the onset of your menstrual cycle. If you have missed your period for seven days beyond the expected date, you can consider taking a home urine pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy.

I hope this helps.
