What is the cause for my lower abdominal pain for the past 15 days with my periods being nine days late?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My period was nine days late. I thought I was pregnant. I have experienced lower abdominal pain for the past 15 days. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Delay in periods among females is common. It can be due to many physiological as well as pathological factors.

Physiological factors include stress, environmental changes, strenuous exercise, medications, etc.

Delay of periods up to one week is considered normal if it occurs once or twice a year and there is no underlying disease.

This lower abdominal pain is most likely because periods were going to occur, which we call premenstrual syndrome. For more confirmation, after your periods are over, you can go for an ultrasound pelvis to confirm if there is any pathology or not.

Thank you and take care.
