Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 40 years old, and I am currently experiencing severe joint pain along with fever and headache. Mosquito activity in my area is also very high, and I suspect that I might have dengue. How does the dengue virus spread through mosquitoes? Can mosquitoes carry the virus and transmit it to us when they bite us? What are the symptoms of dengue, and are my symptoms related to it? I am worried about spreading it to my family as well. If my symptoms are not related to dengue, how can I protect myself and my family from this disease?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Thanks for trusting us with your health care.

I can understand your concern.

The symptoms you mentioned can be seen in different conditions. In dengue, yes, these symptoms are commonly observed, but it is not necessary that you have contracted dengue. As you mentioned, there are mosquitoes in your area. Are there any active cases of dengue at present? Dengue is spread through mosquito bites; there are specific types of mosquitoes called Aedes aegypti that spread this virus. These mosquitoes are mainly observed in the rainy season, where there are high chances of stagnant water getting collected in small places. In that water, the female lays eggs. That is how the mosquitoes keep increasing. The female bites humans, and the virus is transmitted during that.

I suggest you get your blood tested for dengue infection. To prevent infection, remove items around your house that lead to stagnant water collection. Also, use mosquito repellents and wear long-sleeved clothes and pants.
