Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have braces and am in the middle of my orthodontic treatment. Can I drink soda with braces? Is there any way to drink soda without damaging my teeth? Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

There is no strict restriction on consuming soda with braces, but certainly, you can avoid it if possible. Not for orthodontic reasons but for your teeth' health. You are advised to take extra care of the oral cavity during orthodontic treatment for obvious reasons, as there is a higher chance of food lodgement and damage to teeth. Soda does cause a drop in pH, resulting in more cases of cavity formation, which is further amplified when braces are present. On top of that, if you frequently consume soda, the cavity formation situation further increases. Secondly, if you have ceramic braces or aligners, they tend to get discolored on the consumption of colored substances, which reduces their aesthetic component. Hence, if avoidable, do not consume much soda; even if you do, rinse properly and maintain appropriate oral hygiene. Thank you.
