Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I would like to ask if it is still possible for braces to fix a wide gap between two teeth. I still have all four of my molars, so I am worried that I might need an artificial tooth.
Kindly advise.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
I have reviewed your attached photograph (attachments removed to protect the patient’s identity). Unfortunately, braces alone may not be able to close such a wide space completely, especially if the gap is due to the extraction or congenital absence of two premolars. However, a definitive opinion can only be provided after a clinical examination and dental radiographs.
This wide space can be replaced by fixed treatment (you cannot remove), such as:
Implants, which are the most pleasant solution, as the dentist will only deal with the empty area without doing anything to the adjacent teeth.
Fixed bridge (in this case we need to use the teeth adjacent to the space to hold the artificial teeth in place in a fixed way, so these adjacent teeth are usually reduced in size to have like a cap over it, their caps are attached with the artificial teeth that will fill in the space).
Or another solution is removable artificial teeth; they will fill in the space and have something like an arm to hold the adjacent teeth, but you can remove them whenever you like, clean them, and replace them.
I adviced you to visit your dentist for better clinical examination and X- rays if needed, to choose the best treatment plan that suits your case.
I hope it helps.
Thank you.
