Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Because of the lockdown, I have not been able to go for my monthly braces checkup since March. Since my orthodontist comes from another city, because of the strict lockdown measures there, he cannot come to his office in my town. I have just three rubber bands left on my teeth now, the rest snapped recently while I was brushing, and the remaining ones are also close to snapping. I do not know what to do when they all snap. Will not the wire just hang on my teeth then and be super uncomfortable? My teeth have all been pretty much aligned but I am worried they will relapse if I do not go for a checkup soon.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can totally understand the current situation of yours and it is quite tough to manage my own clinic in other state. I am managing it any how these days but cannot continue very long. Since you have a shortage of bands, that is a problem but as you know if you could find your local dentist he might have these bands and will surely help you. Secondly, as you have mentioned that your teeth has been already in shape, it is a benefit. Bands might not be needed anymore just finish what you have. As the fixed braces are on, there is no chance of relapse. So nothing to worry as long as the braces and wire is attached. And if you have braces for extra two to three months that is just fine and will not affect the tooth arrangement in any kind. In worst case scenario, if the braces get detached or just hang, your local dentist can remove them very easily and everyone is well acquainted so neither that will be an issue for you. So If you want my advice, finish off the bands you already have. Once they are used up no need to place further bands. Wait until things get normal as braces will not affect, instead they help to retain the shape. If the braces get loosen visit your local dentist and get it removed. Your local dentist will provide you a retainer that will help to prevent relapse. So nothing to worry about. Brush using an orthodontic toothbrush (or soft bristle). Brush twice a day gently. Use HiOra-K mouthwash, and Colagate visible white toothpaste. Avoid sticky or sweet food as much possible. I hope this helps.
