Introduction:

Your orthodontic care does not end when braces are removed. Your smile should be taken care as keenly as when braces were on. Retention phase is an important phase to maintain your new look and new stabilized ideal occlusion. New look and ideal occlusion is established with the help of bone resorption and bone deposition process and so this requires specific time for the changes to get stabilized in that new position.

The time or duration required for the retention phase will be decided by your orthodontist. Some cases require short duration while a few cases may require longer duration to get stabilized. So, for this retention purpose, retainers are given to patients. Taking care of retainers is patients’ responsibility. Following are some instructions and guidelines about taking care of retainers.

1) Clean Your Retainers Regularly:

  • Cleaning your retainers is equally important as cleaning your teeth. Treat your orthodontic retainer as your teeth.

  • It is better if you clean your retainer after having your meal as well, because it will remove debris from the retainer immediately as they are soft.

  • Clean it with the use of a toothbrush and water.

  • Toothpaste for cleaning of retainers should be avoided because toothpaste contains abrasive contents, which may scratch your retainer. Scratches on your retainer will increase the difficulty in keeping it clean.

  • Avoid using boiling water, microwave, dish washer, etc., for cleaning your retainers.

  • Avoid keeping your retainer on the dashboard of the car.

  • If you notice any debris, stains, hard deposits, etc., on retainers that are not coming out, then take retainers to your dentist or orthodontist for professional cleaning.

Fixed Retainers - If you have fixed or bonded retainers, then you must keep it clean by flossing that area. In the beginning, you may feel it difficult but with practice it will be habitual.

What Happens If You Do Not Clean Your Retainers?

Your retainers will smell or taste worse if it is uncleaned for a longer period of time. Our oral cavity harbors a variety of good bacteria. But when we do not clean retainers, then debris will accumulate on it and retainer will give shelter to many microorganisms, which may be good or may be bad for our health. Until our immunity is strong, it will not cause any harm but may become threatful.

2) Brush Your Teeth Before Putting Retainers:

You should brush your teeth before putting retainers on your teeth, because if you put your support or retainers on dirty teeth, then the retainer will also become dirty very soon. So, it is advisable to brush your teeth before and after wearing retainers.

3) Be Careful While Using Retainers:

  • When you are wearing your retainer, you should be careful that there is no gap in-between your retainer and your teeth.

  • The fit of the retainer should be accurate and comfortable, and it should not be loosely fitting or it should not be too tight in any place.

  • While taking off your retainer, you should be careful and avoid taking off with the help of your tongue.

  • While removing your retainer, avoid pulling it from one side.

  • Avoid pulling off your retainer by holding its wire components.

  • Make sure that while removing, first loosen your retainer from several sites and then get it off.

4) Make a Habit of Using Retainer or Storage Box:

You should keep your retainer in storage box when not in use. Use of a storage box or retainer box will prevent you from missing your retainers anywhere. Storage boxes will prevent retainers from adverse effects of the environment, and they will be safe. Avoid putting napkins on your retainers or avoid wrapping your retainers with cloth or napkins or tissue paper. If you wrap your retainers in napkins or tissue while having a meal, then it may be accidently thrown in the trash.

5) Soak Your Retainers:

As I told you previously, avoid using toothpaste for cleaning your retainers. Then what to do? You can use retainer cleaning, which is available commercially in tablet form. Soak your retainers in that, as it will add extra cleaning to your retainer and will keep it safe. Or you can use soap water for retainer cleaning.

6) Avoid Keeping Your Retainer in Hot Environment:

Your orthodontist prepares your retainers with utmost accuracy and care while for perfect fitting. As retainers work properly when they fit properly. It is advisable that you should keep it safe when not in use, and avoid keeping it in a hot environment, for example in car, windowsill, etc. Otherwise, the retainer material will lose its property and it may deform, melt, or wrap.

7) Keep Your Retainers Away From Pets:

You love your furry friend like a kid but they have a tendency to snack on retainers when they find them. So, it is better to avoid keeping retainers in their vicinity.

8) Wear Your Retainers as Advised:

Retainers are the safest when in use. So do not forget to use them regularly for appropriate maintenance of your orthodontic treatment.

9) Replace Your Retainer When Needed:

You should replace your retainer when you feel it is not fitting properly, whether it is loose or it is causing trauma to soft tissue or it is hurting you. As we have discussed earlier, the fitting of the retainer is very important for its proper functioning. Over the period of time, even properly fitting or well-prepared retainers may lose their property and may hamper its efficiency. It may distort or function differently. So, when you notice its functioning differently, then you should visit your orthodontist and get it replaced if needed. Replacing your retainer is part of keeping your occlusion and smile maintained. Take care of your retainer properly till completion of your treatment. And by chance if you lose them, then make sure that you get it replaced as early as possible.

Conclusion:

The position of your teeth may change throughout your life and even if you think that your teeth are straight and stable now, then also it is essential to use your retainer as advised by your orthodontist. Retainer is the support system of your new smile and for its maintenance, it is essential to take care of your retainer. For more information, consult a dentist online now.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.

Should Retainers Be Stored Wet or Dry?

Retainers should be stored clean and dry in retainer holders. Storing the retainers while wet can make the conditions favorable for the harmful bacteria to grow and multiply. As a result, when worn in the mouth, these infections can be transferred to the mouth and affect oral health, which makes the oral cavity susceptible to bacterial, viral, and fungal infections.

2.

What Should One Avoid Doing With a Retainer?

- Avoid using toothpaste for cleaning the retainers.
- Avoid covering or wrapping the retainers with napkins or tissue paper.
- Avoid using boiling water, a microwave, or a dishwasher, for cleaning the retainers.
- Avoid keeping the retainers in a hot environment or the sun.
- Avoid pulling off the retainer by holding its wire components

3.

How Long Should Orthodontic Retainers Be Worn?

Some people must wear a retainer every day for four to twelve months. Dentists recommend wearing retainers every night except few cases, which may be advised to wear retainers only during the day. Retainers can also be fixed or permanent. Fixed retainers are worn by the patient as there are higher chances of relapse and teeth shifting back to their original positions.

4.

Can Retainers Be Left in Water Overnight?

The retainers can be soaked in water to keep the plastic from drying. The retainer can be soaked in plain water at room temperature or cold water, and avoid soaking them in hot water. One can leave it soaking overnight while sleeping and clean it with soap and water before wearing it back in the morning.

5.

Should Retainers Be Soaked Every day?

Cleaning the retainers is just as important as brushing the teeth. One should clean their retainers in warm water and dish soap once daily to keep them healthy; this is more hygienic and prevents the retainers from attracting bacteria and infections.

6.

How Long Do Plastic Retainers Last?

Plastic retainers usually last for four to five years if properly maintained. Good oral hygiene can affect the quality and durability of plastic retainers.

7.

Should One Brush The Retainers With Toothpaste?

Cleaning the retainers using toothpaste should be avoided because toothpaste contains abrasive contents, which may cause scratches on the retainer. Scratches on the retainers make it difficult to keep them clean. Instead, the retainers should be cleaned with soap and water or any other cleaning materials suggested by a dentist.

8.

What Are the Rules for Retainers?

- Keep retainers clean and hygienic by washing them daily with soap and water.
- Brush the teeth before wearing the retainers.
- Wear the retainers as suggested by the dentist.
- Refrain from using toothpaste to clean the retainers.
- Avoid drinking aerated drinks and acidic juices while wearing the retainers.
- Refrain from soaking the retainers in hot water.

9.

What Happens if One Fails to Wear the Retainers for a Night

Post-orthodontic (braces) treatment, teeth tend to shift back to their original positions. Wearing the retainers prevents this shifting and keeps the teeth fixed in the desired positions. Usually, failing to wear the retainer once or twice is unlikely to cause significant teeth movement.  However, repeatedly forgetting or intentionally failing to wear the retainers can cause the teeth to shift back to their original positions and cause treatment relapse.

10.

Can One Remove Their Retainers for a Few Hours?

Wearing retainers can be troublesome for many people as it causes discomfort. Removing the retainers for some time may not cause a major problem. However, if one repeatedly removes the retainer to gain comfort or if this becomes a habit, the teeth may move back into their original position and cause treatment relapse. Hence, one should be very careful and wear the retainers as suggested by the dentist. Dentists can solve the problem and make the retainers more comfortable to wear if there is any pain or discomfort.

11.

Should Retainers Be Soaked in Hot or Cold Water

Never soak the retainers in hot water. Soaking acrylic, metal, or plastic retainers in warm or hot boiling water can distort the retainers and may not fit the way they once did. If the retainer is covered with a thin to a thick layer of plaque or calculus deposits, a soft toothbrush can scrub the retainer clean. After being rinsed with plain water, soak the retainers in cold water for another 20 minutes

12.

How To Clean Retainers Properly?

- Use a toothbrush to scrub the retainers for effective cleaning.
- Use soap water or plain water to clean the retainers.
- One can also clean the retainers by soaking them in non-alcoholic mouthwashes.
- Avoid using toothpaste for cleaning retainers because toothpaste contains abrasive contents, which may scratch the retainer. These scratches make cleaning difficult since the bacteria and plaque adhere to the irregularities on the surface.
- Avoid using harsh detergents and soaps to clean the retainers.
- Avoid using acids, lemons, or baking soda to clean the retainers.

13.

What Is the White Stuff on My Retainer?

The white layer on the retainers is a sign one is not cleaning them properly. Plaque and tartar from the mouth adhere to the surfaces forming a soft smear or a layer on the surfaces of the retainers. In addition, the calcium deposits from the saliva are deposited in this layer and make this layer hard. This layer gives the retainer a whitish appearance. To clean the retainers, take a glass filled with white vinegar and soak the retainer for not more than two to three minutes, then brush the retainer thoroughly.

14.

How Many Times Should One Clean Their Retainers?

Cleaning the retainers is equally important as brushing teeth. Cleaning the retainers twice daily is enough to maintain retainer hygiene. Make sure to clean the retainers before soaking them and wearing them. Brushing retainers with lukewarm water and dish soap should keep them healthy and prevent attracting bacteria. Rinse the retainers with plain water after every meal.

15.

How Fast Do Teeth Shift Without a Retainer?

Teeth begin to shift, even at night, in the absence of retainers. Therefore, failing to wear the retainers for a day or two may not cause major changes. However, failing to wear the retainers for a week can cause a noticeable small amount of shifting and treatment relapse, like small spaces between teeth or minor rotations. Further, failing to wear the retainers for more than a week to a month may cause more shifting and can even change the bite.
