Can drugs cause derealization and depersonalization events?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 18-year-old male. I recently believe in having been suffering, and possibly still do, derealization and depersonalization from drug usage (tetrahydrocannabinol, psilocybin or psilocin), and I am currently recovering. Would future usage of these drugs under a better mindset create the same symptoms for me?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Depersonalization and derealisation symptoms can occur more in people experiencing anxiety. Using cannabis and Psychedelics like Psilocybin can trigger depersonalization or derealisation symptoms. It can persist for varying periods, sometimes lasting for weeks and months. It is difficult to predict how you will react if you use these drugs again. As you have already experienced, your mental health and wellbeing can be adversely affected by using these drugs. Worsening of anxiety, panic attacks can happen.

I will advise avoiding self -medication, and experimentation with these street drugs or Psychedelics. If anxiety is persistent and affecting your normal functioning, it is advisable to consult your doctor for an assessment and seek appropriate treatment. CBT +/- medication may be needed. I hope this helps.
