How can I manage Type 2 diabetes with lifestyle changes?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 38-year-old female. I have developed type 2 diabetes after my second pregnancy. I developed gestational diabetes while I was pregnant. After delivery, I had normal blood sugar levels.

Now, I have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes recently.

  1. May I know why I have developed this?
  2. Can it occur due to genetic causes?
  3. How to manage this type 2 diabetes through medications and lifestyle changes?
  4. How much exercise should I need to give to my body to keep my blood sugar levels under control?
  5. What are the complications faced when blood sugar levels become uncontrolled?
  6. How to keep these blood sugar levels under normal levels?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Type 2 diabetes can occur in many people after the onset of gestational diabetes due to underlying insulin resistance and changes in glucose metabolism during pregnancy. Factors like genetics, lifestyle habits, hormonal shifts, weight changes, and increased stress on the pancreas during pregnancy may also contribute. To control it:

  1. Plan for a proper dose of medicines.
  2. A proper diet consists of adequate protein, low carbohydrates, and more fiber.
  3. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day, such as cardio and strength training.
  4. Avoid junk food.
  5. Adequate sleep and hydration are a must.
  6. Yoga or other relaxation techniques, like breathing, will be helpful to avoid stress.

To prevent complications like neuropathy or retinopathy:

  1. Make sure blood sugar levels are stable.
  2. Plan for an annual health check-up regularly.
  3. Avoid processed food.

I hope this information will help you.

Take care.
