Should I be worried about my family history of diabetes and heart attack?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My family has a history of diabetes. My dad died from a heart attack resulting from a blood clot. Should I be worried about any possible heart condition or diabetes? Please help me with this, doctor. Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com

It would be best to be more careful than the general population without a family history of these diseases. Adapt preventive measures to delay or halt the development of these diseases in the future. Remember, obesity and a sedentary lifestyle are fertile soil for developing diabetes mellitus. Reduce weight, do regular exercises, adopt an active lifestyle, avoid junk foods and take a Mediterranean diet. Have a fasting lipid profile, fasting blood sugar, and HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin) level tests to stratify risks. Proper sleep and avoidance of stress are also helpful in preventing hypertension. Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption. Regards.
