What tests detect diabetes and kidney damage symptoms?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been passing foamy urine for the past two months and have a tingling or numb sensation in my feet.

What test should be done to check if I am diabetic and also if my kidney is okay?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern, and I will definitely help you with it.

Persistent foamy urine along with tingling or numbness in the feet can sometimes be associated with diabetes mellitus, kidney protein leakage, dehydration, vitamin deficiencies, or other metabolic conditions, so it is reasonable to get evaluated properly.

To check for diabetes and kidney health, useful tests would include fasting blood sugar, HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin), post-meal blood sugar, urine routine examination, urine albumin/protein (microalbumin), renal function test including creatinine and urea, lipid profile, and blood pressure measurement.

Since you also have tingling in the feet, a vitamin B12 and thyroid profile may also be helpful because nerve symptoms are not caused only by diabetes.

Foamy urine does not always mean kidney disease, but if it is persistent for months, checking for urine protein is important. In many people, these symptoms develop gradually and may remain unnoticed until routine tests are done, so early evaluation is always better.

Sometimes lifestyle factors such as poor hydration, irregular meals, stress, lack of sleep, or unhealthy food habits can worsen these symptoms further and affect overall health.

Stay well hydrated, reduce excess sugar intake, avoid smoking if applicable, maintain regular exercise, and avoid delaying the tests for too long.

Do you also have increased thirst, frequent urination, swelling of the legs/face, or recent weight changes?

Hope I have addressed all of your queries and concerns.

Do follow up whenever needed.

Thank you.
