How to manage watery motions and severe nappy rashes in a 7-week-old baby?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

A seven-week-old baby suffers from watery motions, severe nappy rashes, and lethargy.

The baby is passing normal urine but feeding a little less.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and I can understand your concern.

Kindly let me know if the baby is bottle-fed or breast-fed.

Watering or loose motions are expected at this age (physiological gastrocolic reflex).

Give him complete feed (hind milk and foremilk).

Ultimately feed one side of the breast and then another. Frequent changes in breast position can lead to loose motions.

For nappy rashes, I would like to see how severe it is. Till then, you can apply rash free cream over the affected area. Do not rub but just dap it. Rubbing can lead to a skin peel.

If the baby is lazy and not feeding well, I would recommend showing the baby to the doctor. Dehydration can be dangerous.

Feeding is adequate if the baby passes adequate urine (five to six times a day). After that, I would suggest continuous breastfeeding as suggested above.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
