What could be the reason for the loose watery stools of the baby along with tummy ache that is not responding to treatment?

Hello doctor,
My 18-day-old baby had loose watery motion since day seven, he pooped as he was having a tummy ache. Then his tummy swelled, I got him checked by a pediatrician and he suggested Cefixime and a prebiotic. Now three days have passed and there is still no improvement, his tummy pain is getting worse, but it is periodic occurring after a break of two to three hours, and gets worse after the feed. He is both on formula and breastfeeding. Kindly tell me what to do. His birth weight was 7 pounds and now he is 6.8 pounds.

What you are explaining looks more like abdominal colic. You can give drops of Colicaid (dill oil, fennel oil, and Simethicone) 5 drops whenever you feel there is abdominal pain. Give the drops after consulting your specialist doctor. Also please note that small children below the age of six months pass stools either once in two to three days or 10 to 15 times per day, it is normal. You do not call this constipation or lose motions. It is a loose motion only when it is too watery that it comes out of the diaper. Also, the medicine given to you is to the best of my knowledge. If at all there are loose motions it takes up to five days to resolve. In that period you should make sure the child is not getting dehydrated.
