Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
What potential hazards and measures for dog allergies should a toddler's mother take while planning to surprise her husband with a dog for his birthday in order to preserve the child's safety and the well-being of the family?
Furthermore, are there any precautions or safety measures that can be taken to reduce allergy-related issues when bringing a dog into the home with a young child?
Kindly guide me.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
When bringing a dog into a home with a toddler, we do not know whether the child is going to be allergic or not. There is conflicting research on the topic. Some say that early exposure to pets can help build the immune system of the child, whereas other research says that it can trigger allergies if the child is sensitized to dog dander.
Remember that this sensitization can occur later as the infant grows, and the child may develop allergy symptoms after a few years. I would suggest that you go ahead and get the dog. However, be prepared that if your child develops any symptoms of allergy, you will have to get the pet out of the house.
Some preventative measures you can take right now include vacuuming the house regularly, washing the pet regularly, getting a dog with less fur, and restricting the pet to specific rooms in the house. After interacting with the dog, wipe your hands and change your clothes. But all said and done, I am sure your child will be equally excited about the pet, and he will also pet the dog and be near the dog.
So, we cannot exactly prevent his exposure to dog dander. If he is already sensitized to dog dander and has an atopic nature (tendency of an individual to develop allergic reactions), he will start showing symptoms soon. If he is atopic and gets sensitized after the pet comes home, then the child (I assumed the child is a male) will develop symptoms later on. If he is not atopic, then the chances of his developing allergies are remote.
