What do the white spots on the back of the palate indicate?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I discovered a lot of white spots in the back of the palate and I am super afraid that this could be cancer. I do not know if it is possible to upload a picture. I am 29 years old, non-smoker but I do drink alcohol sometimes. I am currently on L-Thyrox 75 mg. I have a problem of dry mouth. There is no pain, swelling, or itching of these spots. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Since how many days have you noticed these spots? Is there irritation while eating hot or spicy foods? It might be just the starting stage of a throat infection and it is definitely not cancerous. Are you taking any medicines? Did you take any specific food items or very hot drinks, etc? Use warm salt water gargle twice a day for a week.

Kindly answer these questions so that I can help you further.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

No, I do not have any irritation while eating. I discovered the spots today. I live abroad and I take L-Thyroxin and Vivinox sleep (strong). I do not know if you know these medicines but the Vivinox sleep medication is known for causing a dry mouth. Could the spots be because of this? Did you see the photographs that I sent? I have taken another photograph, where you can see the spots a bit better. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Glad to have you back.

Yes, dry mouth might cause such spots, and should go away in a week or two. Use warm salt water gargle as suggested. Take a good balanced diet, sleep well, and try to avoid such sleep medication if at all possible. No need to worry at all. I have seen your photographs and I do not find any problematic lesions (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity).

I wish you good health.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I just want to share with you the actual situation. There are still these spots present after I started the treatment with Chlorhexamed. Kindly refer to the picture that I have shared. I am sorry to ask these questions but I am still really worried that I might have developed cancer. Do you think that I need to start another treatment? Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Glad to have you back.

First of all, it is not any kind of cancer so you need not worry about it at all. From the pictures that you have shared (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity), and from your symptoms, it just indicates a common throat infection that would go away in a couple of weeks. There is no need for another treatment plan. I advise you to do a saline gargle. You will start noticing a difference soon.

I wish you good health. Do revert in case of any further queries.

Thank you.

Thank you.
