What causes pain in ear after using neti pot?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I used a neti pot yesterday, for the first time. I was attempting to use the pot on my right nostril, but with my left nostril, everything went smoothly. My sinuses feel much clearer, but I have felt some mild ear pain in my right ear. Is this normal? Did I do something wrong and cause an ear infection?
Please guide.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Neti wash is an excellent and age-old technique to cleanse the sinuses and nasal cavity, especially in people having sinus complications and issues. When you rinse the nasal cavity there could be some ongoing inflammation in the eustachian tube, which connects the nose and the ear. In such a situation, you might have some ringing sounds, occasional pain, and sometimes your voice echoing what we call autophony.
You can consider taking a tablet containing Paracetamol, Phenylephrine Hydrochloride, and Chlorpheniramine maleate one tablet in the morning and evening after food for the next 10 days. This is a combination of anti-histamines and painkillers, which aims to reduce the inflammation and decongest the area of the eustachian tube, and to allow it to restore its function as well. It takes around 10 days for things to resolve so it is worthwhile to wait until then.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
