What causes heavy bleeding and cramps during early periods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My period came three days earlier, with (mild) cramps for four days. On the first day of my period, I had severe cramps (that lasted for three hours), and I had heavy bleeding (normal red color). Then the next two days, I had a small amount of bleeding (with mild cramps). Then on day 4, there was no blood, no spotting of blood, or no discharge. On day 5, I had a brownish discharge, and it was not enough to cover my tampon.

Hi,

Welcome to ilciniq.com.

1. You are a little teenage girl still in the menstrual cycle's developmental phase, and you can have ovulatory or anovulatory cycles.

2. You can get painful periods, and premenstrual syndrome means cyclic premenstrual symptoms.

3. With time I hope these symptoms will be subsided.

4. For now, I suggest you take tablet Postan (Mefenamic Acid) 500 mg eight hourly. When you feel pain and cramps, you can take them for two to five days as needed.

5. Eat a healthy diet, walk daily, do recreational activities, do yoga, and do specific pain-relieving exercises.

6. If symptoms persist, you can have cyclic progesterone as well. I will suggest Norethisterone (synthetic hormone) 10 mg twice daily from day 4 to day 25 cyclically for three cycles. It is optional if you are not getting benefits from Postan and daily physical habits.

I hope you get my point.
