Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

We had unprotected sex three months back and took an Unwanted 72. My period came within ten days from the last menstrual cycle. In the next cycle, it got delayed by fifteen days. After this cycle, my next cycle got delayed by eighteen days. I do not have periods this month. I checked for pregnancy and I had a negative result. What to do?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Unwanted 72 (Levonorgestrel) is an emergency contraceptive pill that is hormone-based. It can cause some side effects of delayed periods or early periods in some females. Please mention whether you have a history of irregular periods, any changes in the body with acne, thinning of hair, and taking any medications. I suggest you take a urine pregnancy test with the first urine of the day to have accurate results. Do not drink too much fluid before doing the test. Adhere to the guidelines given on the package of the pregnancy kit. Please share the outcome of the test and I will help to guide you further.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

This is the first time to have delayed periods after taking Unwanted 72. I do not have acne and thinning of hair. I am not taking any medications. I checked for pregnancy using a urine test and I had a negative result. Please suggest.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your problem. This is the first time for you to have a delay in periods after taking Unwanted 72. It is a hormone-based pill and it causes delayed periods in some females. As it is for the first time, there is nothing to worry about. There are various medicines that help to induce periods. But we need to be sure that you are not pregnant as it can cause ill-effects on your health. I suggest you take a urine pregnancy test again with the first urine of the day tomorrow. If the result is negative, then you can confirm that you are not pregnant and then we can start with the medicines to induce periods.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I am explaining my condition briefly. I had a period before three months and I took unwanted 72 after having sex. After that, my periods came before 13 days of my actual date. My next period got delayed by 15 days. I need to get my periods now but I have not got it. I checked for pregnancy and I had a negative result.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Delayed cycles can occur due to hormonal imbalance, stress, anxiety, and weight gain. Frequent use of emergency contraceptive pills causes irregular cycles and affects your ovulation. As it has been three months of taking pills, the other causes have to be ruled out. You need to check your thyroid and prolactin levels. Do an ultrasound pelvis to rule out any cyst or polycystic ovaries.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
