Common "Ecchymosis" queries answered by top doctors | iCliniq

Ecchymosis

Ecchymosis is the medical term that is used to describe a bruise. It occurs as a result of any damage to the blood vessel that is present near the surface of the skin and causes skin discoloration. Ecchymosis occurs as a result of any sudden impact or injury, which causes the blood vessel to get open and, in turn, leaks blood. The leaked blood gets accumulated just underneath the skin and forms a small blood pool which causes the discoloration of the skin. Ecchymosis goes away on its own within 20-30 days but the injury which caused it might take more time to heal.
