Does sleeping with colored contacts cause infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I carelessly sleep with my soft color prescription contacts every night. After researching the danger of wearing contacts while sleeping, I became worried as I have done this for the past few months. I have never gotten an eye infection or any irritation because of this. Last night I took my contacts out before going to bed. Since then, I have been removing them every night. My eyes look completely normal today, with no signs of irritation. Is it possible to develop an eye infection when I start applying and removing my contacts due to my poor habits in the past months? Will my eyes be fine? Please help me resolve this.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your eyes are perfectly fine. However, daily removal of contact lenses at bedtime is advisable, so please continue this practice. Removing and applying contacts will not cause any infections. I suggest you maintain hygiene and wash your hands before applying and removing it. So what you are doing now is good. Never sleep with your lenses on. Thank you and take care.
