Can irritation and watery eye indicate parasite infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I may be paranoid. I feel like I have parasites (worms) living in my eyes. For a few days my eyes have been getting irritated when I rub them, but today it got worse. My left eye was extremely watery and I decided to wash it. I washed my eyes, but I noticed a white spec right on the bottom of my iris in my left eye. When I looked closer, I saw that it was a line going down. Could that be a parasite? I can feel movement in both of my eyes once in a while. But now the white spec or line has disappeared and I do not feel any irritation. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I understand your concern. I have seen the attached images (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity) and it seems more likely to be a small ulcer rather than a parasite. There is no well-formed parasite to be seen. I suggest you consult an ophthalmologist for an examination of the eye. They will examine with a slit lamp and hence it will be more diagnostic. The irritation and watery eyes could be from the inflammation as well as there are no signs of parasite. I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
