What are the options for grade 3 fatty liver treatment?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 30-year-old male. I have been recently diagnosed with grade 3 fatty liver, and I am apprehensive about my liver health. Can you please suggest me medicines for my grade 3 fatty liver? I am also hypertensive and take medication for the same.

Please help.

Hello, Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

For fatty liver, the underlying cause must be established, like it can be due to alcohol consumption taking extra calories or obesity.

If there is any alcohol consumption, it should be stopped.

The underlying hepatitis B and C status and liver function tests (blood tests) should be checked.

There is no single FDA-approved medicine for fatty liver at the moment; the best treatment is gradual weight reduction, regular exercise, avoiding alcohol, and a good diet (including rich meals and high-carbohydrate meals).

If liver function tests are degraded too, vitamin E (antioxidant) can be used for fatty liver to improve liver tests. However, it is not a permanent treatment. If lifestyle modifications and weight reduction are not considered, it would give no benefit.

I suggest taking a capsule of Vitamin E (400 mg) twice daily after breakfast and dinner for eight weeks.

Consult a specialist doctor and take medications with their consent.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
