Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

The patient is experiencing fecal incontinence, he had brain infarct a few years back and has trouble walking and speech. Walking is totally restricted due to loss of control over his sphincter. He is taking probiotic Vibact twice after food.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com. I read carefully your question and would explain that fecal incontinence is not a common sign of stroke. It could be related to vascular dementia (compatible with the MRI findings). Coming to this point, I would recommend some diet modifications (avoiding food which can increase the motility like orange or plum juice, caffeine, etc.) and performing a stool analysis. Loperamide or Diphenoxylate/Atropine can help reduce the gut motility and thus lead to constipation and reduce the frequency of defecation. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her and start taking the medicines with their consent. Surgical repair of the anal sphincter could be a possible treatment option if the above drugs do not help. Hope you will find this answer helpful.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
