Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My nine-year-old child was sick with the flu, accompanied by a headache and fever, so I took her to the doctor. She prescribed Novatrim suspension. However, when I searched for this medication, I found that it is related to HIV treatment. Could you please explain this to me before I go back to the doctor?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Novatrim suspension is a combination antibiotic that contains Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim. It is commonly used to treat bacterial infections such as ear infections, urinary tract infections, bronchitis, and pneumonia. While it is also used as a preventive medication in people living with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) to protect them from infections (like pneumocystis pneumonia), this does not mean it is only for HIV.
In your child’s case, if the doctor prescribed Novatrim, it is likely because she suspected a bacterial complication from the flu, such as a secondary respiratory or ear infection, which is not uncommon in children.
You are right to ask questions, and it is always a good idea to clarify with your doctor. But please be assured: Novatrim is safe and widely used in children for bacterial infections, and its use in HIV is just one of many valid medical applications.
If you notice any side effects like rash, nausea, or diarrhea, let the doctor know. Otherwise, continue the treatment as prescribed.
I hope this information helps you.
Thank you.
