Why does swelling occur after the recovery phase of a fracture in the foot?

Hello doctor,
I am a 27-year-old female. My right foot got swollen when I started going to work after recovering from a crack fracture on the third metatarsal. I had a cast for three weeks and then on rest for two weeks after removing the cast. After I got back to work, I found that it was still swollen and red-purple and felt painful. The doctor said that the bone is healing and that maybe the swelling could be due to an injury in the tendon and blood vessel. I felt super painful while I had the cast and even now, I am unable to sleep. My problem does not seem to resolve. I took rest for one week and again I got back to work now, and the swelling has also appeared again. Kindly help.

If it was a fresh fracture due to a trauma, then it should heal in six weeks and complete recovery would take about three months. Swelling is a common problem that can be dealt with by using compression socks. So, I suggest you wear these socks on both legs from morning till night and you can remove them before sleeping. This will keep the swelling under check. Do toe movements and ankle pump exercises.
