Why do we get forehead wrinkles with age?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I want to know

  1. Why do men develop wrinkles on their foreheads with age?
  2. Is this more influenced by lifestyle or genetics?
  3. Is it possible to determine which factor plays a larger role?
  4. Are men more or less likely to develop forehead wrinkles compared to women, and why?
  5. What can men do to prevent forehead wrinkles?
  6. Is there anything they can do to reverse them once they appear that does not require surgery?
  7. Do facial muscle exercises (face yoga) help?
  8. What surgical options are available for men, and when might they consider them?
  9. Are forehead wrinkles a sign of an underlying health issue or cause for concern?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Forehead Wrinkles are signs of the aging process. Men get wrinkles due to decreased formation of new collagen and the destruction of existing collagen and elastin in our skin. Wrinkles can be inherited if one gets them early, but in the majority of people, they become prominent with age, and ultraviolet radiation plays a major role in this. UV (ultraviolet) radiation boosts the process of collagen degradation through the formation of reactive oxygen species.

Men get more forehead wrinkles because, in females, estrogen has a somewhat protective role. Men are more exposed to sunlight, and women have a thicker layer beneath the skin that gives good contouring to the skin. Prevention of forehead wrinkles is partially possible because they are part of the normal aging process. Protection from sunlight is very important in this regard.

Treatment of forehead wrinkles can be invasive or noninvasive. In non-invasive procedures, HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) is very famous nowadays. In this, high-intensity focused ultrasound waves are given to the wrinkle area, and it stimulates collagen formation. Invasive methods are Botox injections. Surgical correction requires fillers to be inserted.

I hope this helps.
