Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Seven days ago, my wife gave birth to a daughter. Her birth record is as follows:

  1. Gestation period more than 37 weeks.

  2. The baby's weight was around 6 pounds.

  3. DFC - 32cms.

Four days after her birth, we took her to the breastfeeding clinic (since my wife has difficulty breastfeeding due to inverted nipples and the baby being small) where after four days, her weight was at 6.2 pounds, height was 46.5 centimeters, and head circumference 32.5 centimeters. We are currently feeding her 45 ml of formula milk, 200 milliliters every three hours. However, there are times when we have no option but to give her more due to excessive crying. My only concern is that we were told not to exceed 60 milliliters since she is too small to sustain a feed. Can you guide us given the above data, please? Should we increase her intake? Please guide.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern. Firstly I would like to inform you that you can feed her more if the child is demanding more. You cannot keep the child hungry. Some children take up to 90 or even 100 ml per feed. As long as the child is not having any difficulty in feeding, not having any lethargy or vomiting/ multiple spit ups, and is not irritable and is gaining weight, you need not worry. You can increase the feed as per the child's demands. However, the figure of 200 ml per three hours though possible but seems a little high for a baby this age. Irrespective of what the baby is demanding, you can give. However, do not force feed.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Apologies for the misunderstanding. At the moment we are giving her 45 milliliters per three hours. It is just the bottle itself contains, in total, 200 milliliters.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

45 milliliters is completely alright. As I said, some children take 90 milliliters or even 100 milliliters. You can give as per the child's demands. No force feeding should be there.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
