Is the 4th-generation HIV test accurate?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I did a fourth-generation HIV test after 90 days, and the result was negative. But some say that the window period is about six months to one year. I had neem leaves, tablet Acyclovir, and antibiotics during those 90 days. Could that have affected the reliability of the test? Kindly explain this in detail. When is the fourth-generation HIV test 100 % conclusive?

Kindly explain all my questions in detail.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

We will pay close attention to your worries and address all your questions with utmost care.

The tests done for HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) diagnosis these days are highly sensitive, specific, and give accurate results. You can surely rely on your 90-day test result. It is unlikely that the medicines you had taken would affect the HIV antibody test result.

There are recommendations to get a fourth-generation HIV combo test done at four weeks of unprotected exposure, and if the test result is negative, you can get it confirmed by doing a repeat HIV antibody test at three and six months after your last exposure. I suggest all my patients get the test confirmed six months after the last unprotected exposure.

I hope you got answers to all the queries that you had. Do get back if you have any further queries.

Thank you.
