How long does it take for a jaw fracture to heal and recover?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had a hard crash on my jaw when I was riding a scooter. I went to the dentist to get an X-ray scan.

The X-ray showed that my jaw had a small fracture on both sides. I am seeking further examination and evaluation of my condition.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern and have reviewed the X-ray reports (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity).

The condyles on both sides of the jaw appear to have a crack or a complete fracture due to the accident. A CT (computed tomography) or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan is needed to confirm.

If there is a total fracture on either side or both sides, then you may require surgery to place titanium screws to join the condyle with the lower jaw. If it is just a fracture line, you will need to immobilize the jaw for at least two weeks for adequate healing.

The aforementioned treatment is necessary for normal healing, but you will only be able to consume liquid food through a straw. Either a dentist can perform the wiring, or if they determine after a direct examination that it is unnecessary, you can take care of it on your own. You will also need anti-inflammatory medication for a week or two.

If you have any further questions, please let me know.

Thank you.
