Is it possible to remove freckles permanently?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have small bumps around my nose and some freckles on my cheeks and forehead. Can they be permanently removed? Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query. I understand your concern. Warts can be treated with an application of TCA-trichloroacetic acid. Moles are usually removed with radiofrequency or electro-cautery for cosmetic reasons. However, it should always be removed completely to prevent a recurrence. Recurrence is common if some cells are left behind. TCA application is not as effective as cautery or surgical removal because we cannot determine how much mole tissue is destroyed after TCA treatment. TCA is an acid that destroys tissue by breaking the protein in the tissue. Suppose moles are showing abnormal symptoms leaning towards cancerous moles. In that case, it is always advised to get them removed surgically with clear skin margins, and a pathologist should confirm that the margins are clear. I would not suggest mole removal if it is benign. I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
