Can my stomach pain indicate gallbladder disease?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I think I have a gallbladder disease. My stomach hurts every time after I eat. The pain is in the middle of my stomach and my back. Does it sound like gallbladder disease? Is it something I should go to my doctor or ER? My mother and grandmother had their gallbladder removed, so it may be hereditary.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com. The presence of a genetic component in gallbladder diseases implies an elevated susceptibility due to your family history. The described pain aligns with symptoms of gallbladder stones, particularly if it intensifies post-meals and while reclining. To confirm the diagnosis, an abdominal ultrasound is recommended. Treatment options encompass endoscopic or open surgical removal of the gallbladder, along with medical interventions such as Ursodiol (Ursodeoxycholic acid) or Chenodiol (Chenodeoxycholic acid), or a combination of both if the stones are cholesterol-based.
