How to manage gastritis in a 32-year-old?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 32-year-old male. I work in IT and have to sit and work most of the time. I have this gastritis problem occasionally. I feel like food is coming out again if I sleep immediately and experience heartburn. So I avoid sleeping immediately after the meal. I try to walk for some time before sleeping. I try to incorporate exercises whenever possible but it needs to be more consistent. What are the possible exercises that one needs to do every day? How do I avoid gastritis in the future? Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

1) This is more like GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) rather than simple gastritis.

2) For this, there are certain lifestyle modifications and some medications which I would recommend.

3) Do not fill your stomach at once; take small, frequent meals, so there should be some space within your stomach.

4) Always walk after meals. Do not sit or lie down immediately after meals

5) Dinner around three hours before going to bed

6) Elevate the head of your bed, by around 20 to 30 degrees this will help you to prevent reflux symptoms.

7) Avoid spicy meals or frequent eating out.

8) Antacids like Gaviscon (sodium alginate, sodium bicarbonate, calcium carbonate) syrup 10 ml after every meal and especially before going to bed, you can use on a per-need basis, not daily.

9) When persistent symptoms, take acid suppression medicine like tab Pantoprazole 40 mg half an hour before dinner for seven to 10 days

The above lifestyle changes and medicine would help you out. I hope I have cleared all your doubts.

Thank you.
