How to manage severe cold and cough in a diabetic?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My mother has had a cold and a cough for the previous week. She was given Cetirizine, an antibiotic (Azithromycin), and Ascoril D cough syrup. But nothing has helped, and she is now experiencing vomiting, diarrhea, and insomnia due to severe coughing. Her appetite has subsided, along with an increase in acidity that gives her a burning feeling throughout the day. She is also diabetic.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You cited cough, vomiting due to cough, diarrhea, and acidity as symptoms. You indicated she took Azithromycin tablets and Ascoril for her cough. Continue using cough syrup two teaspoons three times every day for seven days. Antibiotics may induce diarrhea.

Take two capsules of Darolac (probiotic - lactobacillus) twice a day for three days. Follow a soft diet. If your cough is moist and associated with mucus, you should take antibiotics and have a chest X-ray PA (posteroanterior) view, since your cough is severe.

For acidity, take a tablet of Pantocid 40 mg (Pantoprazole) once a day on an empty stomach before breakfast. Because she is not eating properly, be extra cautious while administering diabetes medicine. Please contact me again if you have any other questions regarding it.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
