Does having a six-week gap between gestational age and the last menstrual period suggest growth retardation in the fetus?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 22-year-old wife is pregnant. She had her last period five months back. She had her first scan two months back. There is a gap of six weeks between the gestational age and her last period. I am anxious and concerned.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I have reviewed your reports (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). A difference of two weeks is normal. However, in your case there is a chance of growth retardation in the fetus. Therefore, I suggest you go for a repeat scan.

I hope this helps.

Feel free to ask for more information.

Good luck.
