Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am having symptoms of a cold, including a sore throat and cough, and I want advice on remedies to alleviate these symptoms. I have heard about the potential benefits of ginger tea in soothing a sore throat and wanted to inquire if it could help in my case. Also, what are the other remedies or practices that might assist in healing and easing the discomfort associated with a sore throat and cold?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query.

Common cold and other upper respiratory infections get significant benefits from ginger or root of the plant Zingiber officinale, a common dietary ingredient in many eastern and some western diets and known since ancient times. The chemicals in ginger include terpenes, gingerols, shogaols, and paradols. Additionally, volatile oils and non-volatile pungent components of oleoresin are present. These chemicals have been proven to protect against infection and inflammation, have direct action against microbes (bacteria and viruses), prevent oxidative damage, and possess properties that may protect against cancer.

Considering the above, ginger can be used either as a powder or a paste made from the root, added to the tea, and consumed several times a day. It can produce preventive and therapeutic effects on common colds and upper respiratory infections.

Besides ginger, black pepper has been shown to have significant therapeutic benefits.

Turmeric (curcumin) is also used as an herbal medicine for many inflammatory and infectious conditions. Turmeric could be consumed with hot milk.

Allopathic medicines are prescribed by a local physician for cold symptoms, including antihistamines, antipyretics (for fever), and antiviral drugs for viral infections.

Investigations to be done:

1. Chest X-ray.

2. Blood- CBC (complete blood count), influenza panel, COVID-19 test, renal and liver function tests.

Some of the preventive measures include:

1. Steam inhalation once daily.

2. Warm saline water gargles twice daily.

Hope it helps.

Thanks and regards.
