Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 21 years old. I was using a hair straightener for a long and did not frequently oil my hair too. This has led to excessive hair fall for the last two months and I am losing not less than 100 hair strands a day. I need proper guidance. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

From your history, I understand that your concern is hair loss going on for two months. Any hair loss of less than 100 hairs per day is normal for an individual. Since yours is approximately 100 hairs per day, please answer a few queries so that I may be able to guide you better. Any bald patches on the scalp? Any recent infection or fever episode? Any recent chemical hair treatment? Any chronic diseases like hypothyroidism, or anemia? Any relevant family history? It would be highly advised to stop the use of hot irons to your hair and give it time to repair its damage. Hot irons can lead to hair texture change, hair root damage, and also hair shaft damage. You can do a set of tests to rule out other root causes of hair fall. Do thyroid profile, complete blood count and hemoglobin count, pituitary levels, vitamin B12 levels, vitamin D levels. You can do some simple measures at home like oil massaging your head for 15 minutes in lying down position to increase the blood flow to the scalp twice or thrice weekly and try to use shampoos with less sulfates and chemicals. Strictly avoid the use of hot irons. Please do not panic as it is treatable with medication or other cosmetic procedures. Please revert back with the answers to my queries so that I may be able to guide you better.

The Probable causes

The probable causes are hypothyroidism, anemia, history of any recent infections, hormonal disorders, endocrine disorders, vitamin B12 and D deficiency.

Differential diagnosis

The differential diagnosis is Alopecia Areata.

Preventive measures

Strictly stop the use of hot iron on hair.
