How to manage a headache with dizziness and ear buzzing?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been experiencing a headache for four days now, and I get dizzy too. I am also having back pain whenever I stand up, and I am hearing buzz from my ears. My head hurts whenever I use the screen or monitor to do my work. The last time I felt it was when I got stressed at work. I am around 5 feet 3 inches and weigh 99 pounds. What should I do?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

I am really sorry you have been dealing with this for several days. That combination of headache, dizziness when standing, near blackouts, and buzzing in your ears sounds quite uncomfortable and understandably worrying. While stress and screen use can trigger headaches, what you are describing goes beyond a simple tension headache.

If you get dizzy or feel like you might pass out when you stand up, it is probably low blood pressure or what is called orthostatic hypotension, and ear buzzing is often called tinnitus. Given that your weight is quite low for your height, it also raises the possibility that dehydration, low blood sugar, or nutritional deficiencies could be contributing, especially if you have not been eating or drinking regularly during stressful periods.

Even though stress and screen exposure might be part of the picture, the fact that this has lasted four days with dizziness and near fainting means it is important not to ignore it. You should seek medical attention soon, ideally within the next day, so a clinician can check your blood pressure, hydration status, and possibly run some basic tests.

If the blackouts worsen, you actually faint, or you develop new symptoms like vision changes, weakness, or a severe, sudden headache, then it would be safer to go to urgent care or emergency services right away.

In the meantime, try to rest your eyes from screens, drink fluids regularly, eat small, balanced meals even if you do not feel very hungry, and stand up slowly from sitting or lying positions. Still, these steps are only supportive and not a substitute for being evaluated, because your symptoms deserve a proper check to rule out anything more serious.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer.

Thank you.
