How are social engagement and healthy aging-related?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have heard that maintaining social connections can positively impact the aging process. Could you explain the link between social engagement and healthy aging, and suggest ways to stay socially active as I grow older?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

First of all, you are too young (at 29 years) to worry about old age. Most important is to maintain a healthy lifestyle, healthy diet healthy mind, and mindfulness. A healthy lifestyle means daily aerobic and or daily yoga-based exercises plus a 20-minute brisk walk based on recommendations from healthcare experts. Also, it means regular health checkups annually, screening for at-risk diseases, and regularly consulting your neighborhood family physicians.

A healthy diet means a balanced diet comprising carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients, at fixed and appropriate time intervals. It is advisable to regularly consult a dietary consultant for the same.

A healthy mind means having a positive outlook toward life, having healthy social interactions and family life, and if required having regular interactions with life coaches.

Healthy social interactions help prevent and push back cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, and depressive illnesses, common in old age, the former due to cerebral degeneration and the latter due to loneliness and continued isolation.

Healthy interactions are related to improved procognitive brain neurotransmitters and a declining aging process. Lots of studies are ongoing in this direction and all point to the fact that the aging process can be decelerated by healthy social relationships.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
