Can frequent ear infections cause hearing loss?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I need your opinion about my daughter’s hearing issues. She is 7 years old and has had constant ear problems since she was 2. The hearing test showed mild hearing loss, and the specialist mentioned pneumococcal infections as the cause. She is falling behind in school because she can not hear properly. Gets excruciating infections every few months. Can you explain the connection between her frequent ear infections and the mild hearing loss detected in her hearing test? Could the ongoing hearing issues further impact her language development or academic performance if not addressed? What steps can we take to reduce these infections' frequency or severity to prevent further hearing loss? How effective are ear tubes in preventing ear infections and improving hearing, and are there any risks associated with this procedure for a 7-year-old? Are there any home remedies, medications, or strategies to ease her symptoms while we figure out a long-term solution?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Repeated ear infections can reduce hearing by two mechanisms. The first one is fluid collection behind ear drums after every infection, leading to conductive hearing loss. The second mechanism is the affection of the cochlear nerves by the attacking viruses like influenza viruses, which leads to sensorineural hearing loss.

This problem can affect her language development and further academic progress. To reduce further infections, you should improve her immunity by good dietary habits, and avoiding fast and canned foods.

To talk about ear tubes, I need to see the reports of pure tone audiometry and tympanometry she has performed.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
