Which test is best for detecting heart blockages?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My dad recently had an echocardiogram that showed valve issues. The cardiologist wants to perform a Regadenoson stress test. I thought there were less invasive tests, like calcium scoring, that could provide the same information. Why would the Regadenoson stress testing be recommended over other tests?

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Calcium scoring is not as informative as a Regadenoson stress test; it is a screening test rather than a diagnostic one. CT coronary angiography may provide better information but has false positive and negative rates. However, CT coronary angiography can be used as an alternative to calcium scoring. Additionally, a treadmill test is an alternative to Regadenoson's stress test if he is able to perform exercises. Overall, the Regadenoson stress test is much more sensitive than calcium scoring for detecting blockages.

I hope this helps, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
