What to do if the fetal heartbeat is 89-90 bpm at six weeks?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My LMP (last month period) began two months back and now I am pregnant. I believe I ovulated last month. I had an ultrasound one week back and my GSD (gestational sac diameter) was 0.5 inch CRL (crown-rump length) was 0.18 inch and there was a heartbeat. The FHR (fetal heart rate) was about 87 bpm. They estimated me to be six weeks and one day pregnant. I got another ultrasound today, and GSD was 0.6 inch and CRL was 0.2 inch. There was a heartbeat but was still low, 89-90 bpm. I am leaning toward this being a miscarriage but I have had no symptoms of one. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. Slow heartbeat of the fetus at six to seven weeks of gestation is present in impending abortion, or in chromosomal anomalies like trisomies and Down syndrome. I will suggest you get follow-up scans in two weeks to check for any miscarriage or any signs of chromosomal anomalies in the ultrasound.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Regards.
